Balance: a work ethic and unfeasible goal
You might read this title and come to the assumption that it’s degrading and slightly depressing, but it’s honest. When working towards a goal it’s incredibly important to have honesty. Be honest with your self, and your goals. I find that whenever I am working towards something I need an accurate understanding of where I’m starting and where I want to end up. With my personal goal of balance - I’m starting at ground zero.
Whenever I think of the first week in August I think of a wresting match - odd, I know. I picture myself in a ring with another version of myself. She is filled with procrastination, overhelming-stress, harmful habits, anxiety too if I’m being honest. And then there is me. Another version of myself that I strive towards. She eats balanced and healthful meals, she drinks enough water, she wears cool outfits, hangs out with her friends. August is filled with these two versions of myself boxing for control of my habits and lifestyle. Balance, my goal for the month of August, is the ongoing boxing match that plays in my head. Not one version of myself is winning, even though I desire for the healthy version of myself to win. It’s a mixture of getting 5-hours of sleep from starting my homework at 8pm, instead of after school, and wearing my favorite outfit to school that day. It’s subjective, it’s personal, and it’s honest.
Now my favorite part, what is balance for you? Take a moment and ask yourself this question - and be honest. What two sides of yourself are boxing and who is winning. What can you do this week to even the scales. Mabey it’s getting a normal amount of sleep. For me, it’s not starting my homework at 8pm at night.
Balance in our lives is so incredibly important. It allows for us to honor our best selves, while acknowledging our worst. As much as I desire for the better version of myself to win, we cannot recognize our best selves without being reminded of what our worst looks like. Let your worst habits be a reminded that your body works to serve you, and sometimes it needs a break. Let those habits be a sign to take a moment to do something that brings you joy, and regenerate your reserves. So that when your best self wins the boxing match, they may take in the well deserved glory.
