Why “Euro Summer” should be a year round mindset, not just an Instagram caption

Whether you’ve heard the enchanting stories your best friends recall to you post-arrival, or you’ve seen the trends sweep through the internet ( in your American maisons ) through social media; you’ve heard the term “european summer”. It has made its official debut in our cultural passports, leaving stamps on almost every American value.

- Fashion -

The European aesthetic is sweeping through fashion empires like Vogue and famous designer’s shows. With the emphasis on breathable linen and an effortless vibe everyone, including myself, is in a chokehold. Never in my life have I wanted to wear cowgirl boots accompanied by a sundress more, embracing the coastal cowgirl of Northern California. The extended maxi skirts blend with tiny tank tops and Adidas Sambas to create a hypnotic spell, creating a frenzy for the perfect farmer’s market outfit.

These weekday markets are not only influencing our eating habits but also our fashion, as we notice the influence of their graphics making its way onto our tee’s, tanks, and even pants. The brand “Lisa Says Gah!” showcases her creativity and love for the European summer through her beautiful creations.

But, the emphasis on our favorite market finds are not the only thing captivating the fashion world. Sustainability also strikes as brands create their new “European Summer” lines. As our generation’s love for our planet grows, so does our awareness of practices that are no longer serving their duties. Fast fashion brands like Shien and Zara, are able to provide cheap articles of clothing to a mass market. But at what cost? Why are the clothes so inexpensive? Why are they not lasting as long? All These questions come back to the practice of  sustainability within the fashion world.

By taking the time to create high quality products with ethically sourced materials, brands are not only creating better products but they're cutting down on excess waste and unethical practices within the fashion industry, like underpaying workers in undeveloped countries. Brands like Derf Avenue are not only leaning into the “Euro summer” trends but also doing it sustainably. A win-win for our love of fashion and the environment.

-Lifestyle-

What is it about the European lifestyle that is so captivating? Is it the presence of delicious whole food, the relaxed mindset, the superiority complex from being the first developed country?? And why is it essential that we start embracing our “euro summer” mindset.

Farmer’s Markets

European food is not only known for its delicious qualities, but also its impact on the human body. While its lack of additives and preservatives limit its shelf life, it helps our bodies fight off common diseases that plague the US. These common diseases include diabetes and cancer, but also include cardiovascular related diseases like heart attacks. When comparing the percentage of diabetics in Europe and the US, there is a 5% difference! With only 11% of seniors in Europe being affected by diabetes. While it does not only

come down to differential diets, it plays a major role. In Europe people embrace the seasons and the movement of one’s body, while indulging in year round farmer’s markets and passeggiatas. By enjoying the fruits that are in season, we are giving our bodies the vitamins it craves for that season. Accompanied by the Italian term, passeggiata, Europeans are able to fill their bodies with the vitamins it craves and properly digest said nutrients with the help from the post-meal walk. The passeggiata is heavily valued within Italian culture, as it’s known as a leisurely walk taken for pleasure and often taken after meals multiple times a day! The consumption of whole and high quality foods accompanied by an active lifestyle helps Europeans stay away from those major diseases that plague the US.

I think it’s safe to say that by embracing a “euro-summer” mindset year round we will not only be dressing better, looking better, and feeling better but also living longer!
